Pep Guardiola 'wants to sign' £30m Premier League defender after Liverpool title race

Manchester City already have one eye on next season as they look to bolster their squad ahead of what could be another intense campaign.

The Reds remain locked in a battle for this year's trophy with the race now going to the final day after Liverpool beat Southampton on Tuesday night. It is the second time in three years the pair have found themselves in such a tightly contested race.

A deal for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland already wrapped up, Pep Guardiola has reportedly turned his attention to left back as he eyes a move for Brighton defender Marc Cucurella. That's according to the Daily Mail, who claim the 23-year-old will cost in the region of £30m.

Left back has been somewhat a problem position for City this season, with Joao Cancelo (traditionally a right back) and Oleksandr Zinchenko the two tasked with playing there. The report also adds that Guardiola could also be in the hunt for a midfielder this summer with question marks over the futures of Ilkay Gundogan and Fernandinho.

Liverpool are also expected to make additions to the squad this summer, as they close in on Fulham's Fabio Carvalho. The 19-year-old is expected to join on July 1 and he's already scored against City this season for the Cottagers, when they faced the Manchester club in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

For now, Jurgen Klopp' s attention will remain firmly on the task at hand as the domestic season is set to come to a close this weekend. On May 28, the Reds then have the opportunity to win the clubs seventh European Cup when they take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final at the Stade de France.
