Pep Guardiola wants Man City striker Gabriel Jesus to repeat Southampton performance

Pep Guardiola wants more of the same from Gabriel Jesus as Manchester City look to bounce back from their defeat to Southampton when they entertain Newcastle at the Etihad.

It was a frustrating evening on the south coast for the Blues as they had 26 shots but were unable to find the net and were undone at the other end when Che Adams pounced on an error from Aleks Zinchenko.

For Jesus, the personal drought goes on. The Brazilian has not netted since his crucial equaliser at the Bernabeu against Real Madrid back in February, with the game at Southampton his fourth start and sixth appearance since the restart without finding the net.

Guardiola has retained faith in his young striker though, and is confident that goals for both the player and the team will follow naturally if they keep doing what they tried to do against Southampton at the weekend.

"What I want from Gabriel is the way he played against Southampton," said the coach ahead of the Newcastle game.

"That was maybe one of the best performances he had this season, especially when he had the chance to score a goal to continue and continue and when he kept the ball we could use him in our process. In the box, we were ready to do it.

"Of course we need his goals, he knows it - for himself especially - but if Gabriel gives us the performance he gave against Southampton it will pay off."
