Pep Guardiola urges Danny Rose 'keep fighting' racism rather than retire

Pep Guardiola has urged Danny Rose not to walk away from football after the Tottenham defender revealed his torment over racism in the game.

Rose admitted this week that he "can’t wait to see the back of football" due to the level of abuse black players are subjected to.

Guardiola insists he will seek talks with the England international when Manchester City face Tottenham in the Champions League on Tuesday and tell him not to let the racists beat him.

Rose was among the England players subjected to racism in the recent Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro.

Guardiola said: “I will tell him if I see him, the best way to fight and combat this terrible situation is to keep fighting and being there every day. He’s an extraordinary player.”

Rose said this week: “How I programme myself is that I think I’ve got five or six more years left in football, and I just can’t wait to see the back of it.

“Seeing how things are done in the game at the minute, you just have to get on with it. There is so much politics in football. I can’t wait to see the back of it.”

Rose was a one-time target for Guardiola, who wanted to sign the left back in the same summer as Kyle Walker left Spurs for the Etihad.

City instead signed Benjamin Mendy in a £49m deal from Monaco, who has endured two injury-plagued seasons at the club.

The Frenchman risked the wrath of his manager when spotted partying in a night club in the early hours of the morning last week ahead of a training session he was due to attend.

He was left out of City’s squad for the midweek win against Cardiff, but injuries to Aleks Zinchenko and Fabian Delph means Guardiola is short of options at left back for Brighton.

Guardiola confirmed Mendy is fit for the trip to Wembley, but has offered no guarantees he will be involved.

“Everybody has to help us, not just him,” he said. “Him alone can’t help us arrive in the end of April with the challenge to win something.

“He’s trained the last week or 10 days without a problem, which is incredibly good news.”
