Pep Guardiola told to buy defenders in January transfer window to catch Liverpool FC

Yaya Toure believes Manchester City need to be looking to buy one or two defenders in the January transfer window as he questioned Pep Guardiola's decision to play Fernandinho in defence.

City failed to buy a centre-back in the summer following the departure of captain Vincent Kompany and a major injury to first-choice defender Aymeric Laporte has left Guardiola short at the back.

With John Stones also spending a time on the sidelines with, the City boss has had no choice but to play other players out of position to fill the void left at the back.

Fernandinho has become a regular in defence but former City midfielder Yaya Toure believes the Brazilian is more effective in the middle and, with City falling nine points behind Liverpool following defeat at Anfield, Toure thinks they must strengthen when the transfer window opens.

"I think it might be hard but in January you have to get a defender," Toure told Sky Sports.

"It's not too late, nothing is too late. When I watch the game I don't want to blame nobody, I don't want to blame Rodrigo, he's a young player and a good player, but I think if Fernandinho was in the middle it would be really important.

"City miss him in there, he is strong, sharp, clever and anticipates and tackles. I respect the decision of the manager because he is so clever and so smart but I don't like him in defence. They need to bring someone experienced in in defence because Laporte is injured for a long time and Mendy was not there."
