Pep Guardiola thanks his Man City players for "following me" after Mikel Arteta exit

Pep Guardiola thanked his Manchester City players for 'following him' and responding to Mikel Arteta's exit with a victory over Leicester on Saturday.

The Citizens went a goal behind at the Etihad but ran out 3-1 winners with Riyad Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan and Gabriel Jesus cancelling out Jamie Vardy's opening effort.

Guardiola was full of praise for his side following the match, with the win seeing the champions move to within a point of the Foxes in the Premier League.

He said: "We made an incredible performance with the ball and without the ball. Having Vardy there is always dangerous, but we were always at a high, high level.

"Thank you so much to the players for following me. We try and convince the players this is the team we want to be.

"Against a team like Leicester we scored three goals and we could have scored more. That means a lot for the quality and mentality."

Guardiola had to shuffle his backroom staff before the Leicester match following Arteta's departure to Arsenal to become the club's new head coach.

The City boss release a statement to confirm the Spaniard's exit on Friday.

It read: "Mikel has been an excellent coach for Manchester City.

"He has shown impressive dedication, hard work and knowledge of football during his time here and has been a real contributor to the club's achievements over the past years.

"We all wish him well in his new role; I am sure he is ready for it."

Arteta was in the stands to watch the Gunners draw 0-0 with Everton earlier on Saturday.
