Pep Guardiola tells Man City players how to make Real Madrid starting lineup

Pep Guardiola will be watching his Manchester City players train over the next few weeks to decide which of them are the most committed to take on Real Madrid.

Real Madrid have taken a break after winning La Liga but the Blues will not put their feet up between their final Premier League game against Norwich on Sunday and the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie a fortnight later.

Guardiola already fully knows what some players can bring to the team, and may well use the Norwich game to experiment with others as he did with Joao Cancelo at left-back against Watford.

However, the disappointing nature of the Arsenal defeat has reiterated the need for the players to show they will put the effort in. City's manager was so taken aback by the loss that he has been unusually critical of the team's performance in public.

Guardiola described the performance at Vicarage Road as "the minimum" that he expects and went on to say that places are up for grabs in the Madrid lineup depending on who impresses him in training.

"It is important to arrive at the locker room and think you have done everything to try to win the game. It is not about winning or losing. We are here to try to win but you can lose - the opponent is also playing and you can play badly. But you have to run, you have to fight. In the first half against Arsenal it didn't happen and that is why we lost.

He added: "Now we are going to play another game and after that we have two weeks and I will see. I will look at the training sessions and I will smell the players that are more committed and able to play this game."
