Pep Guardiola tells Ederson to be more precise - but urges his goalkeeper to keep taking risks

Pep Guardiola has given Ederson licence to keep on taking risks – despite being left exasperated by the Manchester City goalkeeper’s rush of blood against Wolves.

The Brazil international charged out to midfield in the Premier League champions’ 3-0 win on Monday night, with Guardiola looking far from impressed on the touchline.

Asked afterwards about the incident, City’s manager responded: “No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no!”

But Guardiola will not tell Ederson to curb his risk-taking ways after signing him for his sweeper/keeper qualities.

“I am so pleased because he plays high,” said the Catalan. “The keeper has to defend our back four with the long balls and he was perfect.

“After that he has to be more precise. But to handle the risk is not easy.

“When he does that our build up is better and our midfielders get the ball in better conditions.

“We love Ederson the way he is. That’s why it’s not a problem.”

Ederson has been outstanding since joining from Benfica 18 months ago and has erased memories of Guardiola’s problems with Claudio Bravo, Willy Caballero and Joe Hart as he tried to find an ideal No1 at City.

"I think I have improved a lot since I arrived,” he told City’s matchday programme. “Pep always gave me a lot of confidence to play my way.

"I might have made mistakes because of my way of playing, but mistakes are part of football. I never let that influence my game.

"I really appreciate the freedom and the confidence he gives me to play the style of football he wants. He helped me a lot.

"I got the hang of it very quickly and that goes in benefit of the team.”
