Pep Guardiola tells Benjamin Mendy and Riyad Mahrez why they could start next Man City game

Pep Guardiola has told his Manchester City players that they are more likely to maintain their places in his starting XI by getting on the scoresheet.

Guardiola saw City record their first win in three Premier League outings, scoring more than once for the first time in seven games in all competitions.

City's win was effectively sealed in the first half with a Riyad Mahrez brace followed by Benjamin Mendy's first goal for the club. Both players have been in good form since the November international break, and Mahrez would complete his first City hat-trick in the second half.

Despite the confidence-boosting win, Guardiola was still looking for improvements from his side, but described the importance of getting the three points against Burnley.

"It's important to come back for victory in the Premier League, but it's one more game," he told BT Sport.

"We play a lot of games, and to maintain a good level for 90 minutes is not easy. It's nice, but there are always things to improve."

Guardiola was then asked about Mendy and Mahrez's contributions, to which he laid down a simple incentive to his squad: "It's important for our people upfront to score goals. If people score goals they have more chance of keep playing."

However, Guardiola was more downbeat when discussing City's upcoming schedule, with a Champions League trip to Porto coming up this week, before a Premier League game against Fulham.

He explained: "The problem today is even with ten games the players lose the joy of playing football. Before it was nice playing football once or twice a week with spectators.

"Now it's three days [and] another one. It's one point or draw or win to qualify. We will travel there to win, then prepare against Fulham."
