Pep Guardiola surprised by Man City striker Gabriel Jesus in Liverpool FC game

Pep Guardiola hailed the return of Gabriel Jesus as the striker helped Manchester City to a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

Mo Salah gave the visitors the lead at the Etihad after Kyle Walker had clumsily brought down Sadio Mane in the penalty box. However, the Blues fought back and were back on level terms thanks to a terrific piece of skill from Jesus. Collecting Kevin De Bruyne's pass in the area, his first touch took him beyond Trent Alexander-Arnold and his second put the ball in the back of the net in a brilliant bit of forward play.

Guardiola was impressed by that contribution but he also took time to praise the energy of the player for lasting the full game on his first start since the opening match of the season back in September.

"He was really good," said the manager. "I didn't expect he could sustain 90 minutes but he did it. His physicality is so strong and his rhythm. He helped us, he made a fantastic goal as a striker and a good result for him."

City's manager was not in a brilliant mood as he joined Jurgen Klopp in railing again against the decision not to have room for five substitutes in every Premier League game.

However, he did declare himself satisfied with their start to the season overall.

"I am maybe happier than ever [with the start]," he said. "12 games, we lost one in all competitions. We concede three penalties, today we concede one because we didn’t learn, hopefully this is the last time we give the opponents a penalty like this."
