Pep Guardiola sends message to three Man City players over first-team battle

Pep Guardiola has told his three first-team left-backs that they have to convince him they should be first choice as he mulls over who should start against Everton.

Aleks Zinchenko began the season as a regular at left-back, with Benjamin Mendy still returning to fitness and Angelino returning to the club this summer from PSV Eindhoven.

But the Ukrainian hasn't had the best start to the campaign and he didn't make the matchday 18 for the wins over Watford and Preston over the past week.

Mendy spent the summer working hard on his fitness in a bid to reignite his City career and he started against the Hornets a week ago, while coming off the bench against Shakhtar Donetsk and Preston.

Guardiola's decision to bring Angelino back to the club, just a year after he was sold to PSV Eindhoven, raised some eyebrows in the summer, but he played 45 minutes against Watford and 60 minutes at Preston and has looked impressive in both games.

City activated a buy-back clause inserted in the deal to sell Angelino to PSV to bring the 22-year-old back from Holland and he is now battling with Zinchenko and Mendy for the right to be the Blues' first choice left-back, with Guardiola telling the trio to prove to him they deserve the role.

"In training he is fantastic. We brought him back because of what happened with Mendy being injured for two years," Guardiola said of Angelino.

Are young players premier league ready for Man City?

"We know his quality. Up front he is incredible, so clever. Angelino has three years here, he knows the habits. The game against Watford I decided Mendy. Angelino at Preston. Let’s see how they can convince me.

"They need time. The Carabao Cup is a perfect competition for us to try and win but play the players who aren’t playing regularly for the rhythm."
