Pep Guardiola sends best wishes to Virgil van Dijk and Liverpool after horror injury

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has sent his well wishes to Virgil van Dijk as the Liverpool star faces a prolonged spell on the sidelines.

The Reds confirmed on Sunday night that the Dutchman had sustained ACL ligament damage against Everton at the weekend.

As a result of the injury, the centre-back now faces the prospect of missing a significant chunk of the upcoming campaign.

Van Dijk was forced off injured inside the opening 10 minutes at Goodison Park on Saturday after being on the end of a reckless challenge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Liverpool are not yet in a position to put a timescale on his absence as he will now undergo surgery, after which his situation will be assessed again.

City defender Aymeric Laporte, who himself missed a large chunk of last season with a knee injury, yesterday wished Van Dijk well on his recovery.

And now City boss Guardiola has followed suit and admitted he is hoping to see the Dutchman back action making the Premier League better soon.

“I hope Virgil gets well soon and recovers,” Guardiola told the press ahead of his side’s Champions League clash against Porto tomorrow night.

“I don’t like important players being injured and out for a long time. I don’t know him, but he looks strong.

“I look forward to him coming back and making our league better. He's one of the best. All the best to him and Liverpool.”
