Pep Guardiola says Phil Foden's Man City penalty miss agony will benefit him in the long run

Pep Guardiola says he will speak to Phil Foden about his Carabao Cup penalty miss on Thursday.

Manchester City 's defence of the Carabao Cup ended in a penalty shootout defeat by West Ham to bring to an end a five-year winning streak in the competition.

And it was Foden - who volunteered to take the first spot-kick - whose miss eventually cost his team as he dragged his shot wide of the post and the Hammers scored all five.

The 21-year-old looked gutted at the end but Guardiola said he would be left alone tonight before having a few words with him in the morning.

"I will speak to him tomorrow," said Guardiola. "He had the courage to be the first to take one, and unfortunately he missed.

"But when you have the courage to take one, next time it will be much better."

Guardiola was philosophical about the end of City's splendid run in the competition, wich saw them equal Liverpool's record of winning the League Cup four years on the bounce.

"An incredible run has finished," he said. "We finished in a good way. We played in a really good way, creating chances against a team who defended deep.

"On penalties, they were better. Congratulations to West Ham. Next year we will be back."
