Pep Guardiola's message to his Man City players ahead of Newcastle clash

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says his side must rediscover how to make the most of their dominance, following their 1-0 defeat to Southampton on Sunday.

City enjoyed much of the possession at St Mary's but could not find a way through the Saints defence, who hung on following Che Adams' first-half goal.

Newcastle head to to the Etihad Stadum on Wednesday evening, looking for their first Premier League win at City since their left Maine Road.

And while the home side are again expected to have lots of the ball, Steve Bruce and Co will be encouraged by the way Southampton frustrated their attacking style on Sunday, with City ineffectual in front of goal.

However, Guardiola felt his side played well, but need to turn more of those performances into three points.

"In general the games we played we were more than good. That is my feeling," he said after the defeat to Southampton. "We played more than good but it is not enough to win the games.

"We lost but we cannot say we are a team who doesn't score goals this season, we are leading in goals, we create a lot of chances but in reality we concede less than other teams in the Premier League but we lost a lot of games, a lot of games - and that's why it is difficult even for me to find a reason why but we have to insist and talk about the game, the way they play and concede as little as possible and try to score goals.

"I have confidence we can do it because we are the same guys that we are and we did it in previous seasons. This season the way we are playing is quite similar but it is not enough to win the games."

Newcastle lost 2-0 to Man City in their FA Cup quarter-final clash on Tyneside just over a week ago, but took a point in a 2-2 draw at St James' Park earlier in the season.

Sergio Aguero, who always seems to enjoy playing against the Magpies, will miss Wednesday's game, while United have injury concerns over Allan Saint-Maximin and Isaac Hayden.
