Rio Ferdinand believes Pep Guardiola made clear mistakes with his Manchester City team selection against Lyon.
Guardiola's side crashed out of the Champions League in dramatic fashion on Saturday night after a 3-1 reverse in the quarter-final.
A brace from Moussa Dembele off the bench proved decisive in controversial fashion, despite Kevin de Bruyne bringing City level midway through the second half.
A big discussion point before kick-off was City's team selection, with Eric Garcia and Joao Cancelo starting in a new-look 3-4-3 system.
However, Guardiola was forced to change that after an hour, introducing Riyad Mahrez, which made an instant impact.
The City boss was also reluctant to use Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva and David Silva and Ferdinand believes the City boss will take his share of the blame for a negative starting team.
"I think he is going to have to have a look at himself, in terms of his team selection and the way he changed his formation," Ferdinand told BT Sport.
"Even playing Cancelo at left-back, so many times the ball came out there and he came back on his right foot.
"Getting in-behind team is what Pep is about. Overloads in wide areas and getting in-behind teams.
"In those areas behind the wing-backs, there were perfect areas to get in-behind but you need creative players to draw people out to create space for runners.
"They didn't do that enough in this game."
He added: "That might have been brought on from previous games where they've come a cropper at this stage in previous years.
"Maybe Pep thought they needed to be more cautious, less expansive but when you're a player in the changing room and you don't see the names on the team sheet you expect to see.
"It sends a little message. When we think about how good City are, it's always the offensive-side of the game.
"The imagination, the creativity, all of it was on the bench today. Mahrez comes on and the whole look changed.
"You'd be delighted (as a Lyon player looking at the team). As a defender, I'm sitting there knowing what Raheem wants, want Jesus wants. The players that give you the nerves are those that are unpredictable.
"The two Silvas, Mahrez, Foden. They have the ability to bring the nervousness."
