Pep Guardiola's concern that should answer Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea selection headache

Last weekend was a very good one for Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel's men brushed Tottenham aside in their own back yard while reigning champions Manchester City dropped points to Southampton at home.

It left the Blues tied on 13 points at the top of the table with Liverpool, the two teams boasting identical records with five games played.

But with Tuchel already facing three of the so-called big-six, it is hard not to be more impressed with Chelsea thus far.

Another big test lurks around the corner, however. Pep Guardiola's side strolled to the the Premier League title last season and they will be looking to win the crown in back-to-back seasons for a second time under the Spaniard.

Undoubtedly, he will be looking to bounce back in style when he takes his side to west London for a Saturday lunchtime kick off.

Everything seems to be in favour of Chelsea ahead of this weekend. Tuchel has had Guardiola's number at every turn since he arrived at Stamford Bridge in January.

The pair have gone head-to-head three times and on each occasion it is the German who has come out on top. 1-0 in an FA Cup semi-final, 2-1 in the Premier League and, of course, 1-0 in the Champions League final.

Tuchel, then, probably does not need any added encouragement when it comes to facing a manager that would strike fear into most others.

But during Saturday's match with Southampton, City offered him one. Considering that their two previous home games had both ended in 5-0 victories, not much hope was given to Southampton.

Ralph Hassenhutl's men may have come away from this disappointed not to have taken all three points. In 90 minutes, Guardiola's side, chocked full of attacking talent, managed just one shot on target from 16 attempts.

From a club capable of bringing Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden off the bench, better is expected to say the least. But what does this have to do with Chelsea?

Heading into the Stamford Bridge showdown, it appears Tuchel is continuing to sweat on the fitness of first-choice goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. The Senegal shot-stopper injured his hip against Zenit St. Petersburg and sat out the trip to Tottenham.

Kepa Arrizabalaga stepped in and performed admirably, albeit against a lacklustre attack.

The Spaniard has been criticised in the past for poor positioning leading to goals. There is a reason Frank Lampard opted to replace the most expensive goalkeeper of all time, after all.

But, if Tuchel was pondering whether or not to risk Mendy, the wayward shooting of their weekend opponents may well make up his mind.

If Mendy is not fully fit for the fight, there may not be a need to risk him.
