Pep Guardiola reacts to Real Madrid vs Man City Champions League fixture switch possibility

Pep Guardiola appeared to be unfazed by the possibility that Manchester City will lose home advantage for the second leg of their Champions League tie against Real Madrid.

Uefa are to discuss the idea that the last 16 game, which is scheduled for early August, should be switched to Lisbon rather than at the Etihad Stadium.

The final stages of the competition will now be held, in a World Cup-style tournament, in the Portuguese capital spread over a fortnight in late August.

And after taking advice, they are likely to do the same with the remaining last-16 games, which are City against Real, Bayern Munich vs Chelsea, Juventus vs Lyon and Barcelona vs Napoli, all to be held on August 7 and 8.

That means what should have been a home game for the Blues, who have a 2-1 advantage from the away leg, could now be played just an hour's flight from Madrid.

But in the circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic, Guardiola was clearly at pains not to complain about the staging of a football match.

Asked about the possibility of the switch, Guardiola replied: “The only plan I have is to prepare for Burnley (next Monday), and arrive in the best condition for Madrid.

“The only reality we have is we won the first leg but now we have a second leg against the king of this competition, and a lot can happen.

“It would be a pleasure to go to Portugal and play there but we can improve, try to do better and try to qualify for the next round.”
