Pep Guardiola pays tribute to Vincent Kompany and tips him to be future Man City boss

Pep Guardiola hailed Vincent Kompany as a future Manchester City boss after paying tribute to the departing defender.

Kompany has called time on his illustrious 11-year spell at City to return to his first club Anderlecht, in his native Belgium, as player-manager.

The former skipper has long been touted as a future City manager, given his iconic status at the club, and Guardiola endorsed that view at the open-top bus parade, in front of 100,000 fans, to mark their historic domestic Treble.

"I think we're going to miss him a lot,” said Guardiola. “I'm going to miss him, but he's going to see us in the future because he's coming back - sooner or later.

“It's the best way to say goodbye after an incredible season together. He was a real captain, he helped us a lot and we're going to show him how we love him.”

Kompany, 33, won 10 trophies during his time at City, including four Premier League titles.

He bowed out by becoming the first captain to land the English domestic Treble.

Addressing the crowd to say farewell, Kompany said: “I want to say thank-you to everyone, 11 years at his club, what a journey we've been on.

“We were always a great club, but now we've got silverware and I'm really proud that with this group of players we've been able to give the fans something you've deserved for a long time.”

Kompany's stunning 30-yard strike, which sealed a crucial 1-0 win over Leicester in City's penultimate game of the campaign, was voted goal of the season.

“The moment that ball against Leicester went top bins, I knew I was done!” said Kompany.

“What am I doing even trying that? It’s silly. It’s ridiculous. That goal goes before the one against United in 2012. But beating the Reds is such a great feeling, any day, any week, any year.

"This team is ready to achieve so much more. I’ve given everything I could for this club. I can’t tell you how proud of that I am.

“People respect someone going down and getting back every single time, which is what I've done.”

Guardiola, who wore a black and white cap given to him by the wife of City's late Life President and former Club Secretary Bernard Halford, paid tribute to his coaching staff.

"Without them, it's impossible,” said Guardiola. “The players cannot do it alone, I cannot do it alone. We push each other.

“They are my right arm, my brain - everything. When you're alone, it's boring. It's much better to do it together.

“One week ago Bernard's wife gave me this present and said we're going to celebrate the Premier League," said Guardiola. "I said I will wear it for Bernard."

Asked if he was already thinking about next season, Guardiola said: “Zero. Now it's time to have good food, good wine and enjoy this incredible season together.

“In a few weeks we're going to think about it. Now we are going to enjoy what we've done.”
