Pep Guardiola names the two reasons Kyle Walker was drafted in as Man City emergency goalkeeper

Kyle Walker got the nod to become Manchester City's emergency goalkeeper against Atalanta from the club's goalkeeping coach.

Claudio Bravo came on for the injured Ederson at half-time of the Champions League game but was given a red card with 10 minutes of the match still remaining.

Having already brought on Sergio Aguero for Gabriel Jesus, Pep Guardiola was left with five options for his final change: Walker, John Stones, Angelino, Tommy Doyle and Eric Garcia.

England defender Walker is no stranger to the goalkeepers as he sometimes joins in with their drills in training, and the manager was happy to take the recommendation of his goalkeeping coach as the Blues fought to save the game.

"We didn't know before but Xavi Mancisidor, our goalkeeper coach, suggested him for his courage and because he is quick," he said.

"We are lucky we only conceded one shot on target when he was in goal but congratulations for the courage and desire to help the team in this position."

Walker caught the free-kick he had to immediately face at the second attempt and managed to keep the score at 1-1. He was serenaded with chants of 'England's No.1' from the City fans, who kept their humour despite the bizarre events that had unfolded in goal.

That point means the Premier League champions retain control of their Champions League group and can confirm top spot with a draw at home to Shakhtar next up.
