Pep Guardiola name checks three Newcastle United players after Man City are held by Magpies

Pep Guardiola spoke about his admiration for three of Newcastle United's players during the 2-2 draw at St James' Park on Saturday.

The former Barcelona star rubbished suggestions that his team had underestimated Newcastle after twice throwing the lead away and, despite his pain of dropping two points, he was extremely respectful of United.

Guardiola's side have visited Tyneside twice this year but emerged with just a point.

After the game he was asked if he'd underestimated Newcastle but said: "For the way we played? Because we drew?

"The reason why we drew is that we underestimated them? I don't think so.

"If we had won the game, we should have underestimated them?

"But that is not an underestimation, that is they have an action, we lose the ball, they go there."

Guardiola name checked three Toon players in his post-match Press conference.

Guardiola was reflecting on the moment in which Miguel Almiron and Javier Manquillo won a free-kick, and added: "The quality from Almiron created a free-kick.

"At the end, Shelvey put it in the corner, so congratulations to them. We could have avoided that in that position, and that's all."

When asked about Raheem Sterling's miss at the end, Guardiola said: "Dubravka made a good save."

Guardiola then spoke of Man City's experiences at St James' Park in 2019, he went on: "Last season, we played badly, we played poorer than today.

"I feel we did everything to win the game and the guys responded perfectly, so that is the truth."
