Pep Guardiola must avoid third consecutive Man City surprise at Bournemouth

Almost two years to the day, Raheem Sterling scored the goal at Bournemouth that would set Manchester City on their way to becoming one of the most dominant sides English football has ever seen.

After a chastening first year in the Premier League, Pep Guardiola had seen his side start well enough at Brighton but a host of missed chances and defensive susceptibility in a 1-1 draw at Everton saw him need to be convinced by his chairman that everything would in fact be better.

The Blues weren't great days later on the south coast but Sterling's late, late winner was enough for a win that would become their first of 18 on the bounce. The manager's levels of stress and doubt began to fade.

On their next and most recent trip to the Vitality Stadium, City took a lead at the top of the Premier League that they would not relinquish before the end of the season and Guardiola rarely appeared happier in a press conference than he did on that sunny Saturday.

"You think today it is not going to happen," he proudly beamed.

"Maybe today they will be tired, maybe today they will struggle, maybe today will not be the day and it is completely the opposite because time after time we are there."

All thoughts of that miserable, biting January defeat on Tyneside melted away and the Blues would not blink again.

On Sunday, for the first time in three visits, Guardiola needs to avoid a surprise.

In each of the last two seasons, he has arrived at the ground unsure of exactly how good his team would be and left with more knowledge and more points. Having become the first side in a decade to retain the Premier League title, the manager insists he has no doubts about the mentality of his players.

Saturday looks about as freakish a result as the division is likely to see all season and if there are no concerns over the mindset of the squad then the competition for places that looks the fiercest they have ever had should ensure that performances don't drop.

But football is a funny old game and anything but another three points from Bournemouth this weekend will test of the strength of those beliefs.

After such memorable moments from their trips to take on Eddie Howe's team, Guardiola will surely settle for an utterly forgettable game this weekend as long as his side leaves with three points
