Pep Guardiola makes Premier League claim and compares title victory to Liverpool's Champions League win

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has admitted the difficulty Liverpool face in winning the Premier League despite being crowned Champions of Europe.

The Reds achieved a record points haul in the league but finished one point off the pace of Guardiola's side.

Jurgen Klopp's men ended the season in style as they won the Champions League in Madrid, but the Spaniard believes the Premier League is a more difficult task.

Guardiola also recognises Liverpool's eagerness to end the club's three decade league trophy drought.

Speaking to Catalan newspaper Ara via the Daily Express, the 48-year-old said: "Winning the Premier League is very hard, and I speak from experience.

"Liverpool claimed the Champions League trophy. This is the first time in 10 years that a team has won two consecutive league titles, which Barcelona has done many times [in La Liga].

"I am certain Liverpool are eager to win the Premier League. Liverpool have not won the league for 30 years, and we all saw what a team Liverpool were this year."

The Man City coach last won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2011.

Guardiola continued: "I finish the seasons very tired, although when you win it is less [tiring].

"Winning is very addictive and gives you energy. This gives you the league.

"That's why when they tell me, 'But he has not won the Champions League', I answer that I would like to clarify that I would like the Champions League, but the league is what makes the players follow you, because every three days you win.

"Instead, when you lose, players stop believing in you. The league puts you in place.

"That is why I have [always] had it, from managing the [Barcelona] B team, as the absolute priority.

"I can not leave everything at random from a less controllable competition such as the Champions League or the cups, as they are in England."

Liverpool will face Man City in the Community Shield at Wembley on August 4.
