Pep Guardiola makes honest admission over Liverpool leading Man City in title race

Pep Guardiola claimed he is "not thinking" about Liverpool's lead over Manchester City in the title race while pointing out his side have played one less game.

The City manager said he was simply thinking about their next match against Leeds United, rather than the amount of points they might need to win the title.

Both Liverpool and City have raised the bar in English football over the last three seasons - between them posting all four of the highest ever point totals in the top flight.

The Reds have so far recorded three wins from three at the start of the 2020-21 season and are looking to defend their Premier League crown after dominating all before them last term, finishing 18 points ahead of City in second.

The champions have already amassed a six point lead over City in this campaign following Guardiola's shock 5-2 against Leicester City last weekend, though the League Cup holders do have a game in hand on Jurgen Klopp's side.

And Guardiola said he is not even contemplating the effect that Leicester defeat will have.

“It’s the second game, we have played one game less so we are going to play the third game,” he said.

“I’m honestly not thinking of the points we have to get for the title.

"I’m concerned and focused on tomorrow - the way we have to play, the players I need to select.

“Sooner or later I have to give minutes to the players coming back from injury or Covid.

“In the meantime, try to get points in the league, qualify in the cups and go game by game.

“You see the schedule - we don’t have much time for days off, there are games every three days so this is what we have to do and after we’ll see the results and consequences of what we’ve done.”
