Pep Guardiola makes David Silva vow as teammates mark the end of a Man City era

David Silva received the "smallest standing ovation of all time" according to Pep Guardiola.

But the Manchester City boss made it plain that the fans will get the chance to give him the thunderous send-off he deserves once the lockdown ends.

Silva was substituted with five minutes left with players and officials clapping him off in the almost-empty Etihad Stadium as the Blues beat Norwich 5-0.

City fans took to social media to express their regret at not being there to join in the appreciation but Guardiola said that day would come.

He has already said City will work out a time for Silva to return and receive the acclaim of the supporters.

And he re-iterated that after Silva's 309th - and final - Premier League game for the club.

"It was the smallest standing ovation of all time but he will come back to receive the ovation he deserves," said Guardiola.

"I have the feeling that the fans want to do it, but what they (the players) have done on the pitch shows the gratitude and the honour that he has to have for the incredible 10 years.

"The team wanted to let him feel that and say thank you for what he’s done for this club for 10 years."
