Pep Guardiola lauds 'legend' Sergio Aguero as Man City close in on title

Pep Guardiola hailed Sergio Aguero “a legend” as Manchester City kept their title hopes alive by an inch.

The striker grabbed the winner – awarded by goal-line technology with the ball 2.95cm over the line – his 20th league goal of the season.

And Guardiola has insisted Aguero had come up with “another important goal” to break Burnley's hour long resistance

The boss said: “The guy is a legend. He does that all the time, scoring important goals.

“He is an incredible player. Every time he does it I am delighted."

City leaped back to the top of the Premier League table ahead of Liverpool in their epic title fight.

Guardiola added: "We have won 12 in a row. Of the last 20 we have won 19. That is massive, incredible.

“The distance we have put from third or fourth, 20 points from United and Tottenham . It is incredible. At the start of the season I did not expect that.”

The City boss paid tribute to Liverpool's challenge, insisting it was remarkable they are slugging it out in a duel at the top and one club will not win the title despite getting over 90 points.

Guardiola said: “It is tough for Liverpool and it is tough for us to be with 91-92 points and still not be champions.

“It is the reality. They push us, we push them and in the end we will see.

“In two seasons we have 192 points! Maybe one team in one season will make 100 points in a season. The second one to make 92, 98. That is not going to have very often.

“Now recovery and rest and unfortunately enjoy the semi-final of the Champions League, and go to Leicester full of gas with our fans who will not leave us alone.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's gruelling Man Utd pre-season plans revealed

“After defeat to Tottenham our reaction has been outstanding, overwhelming. Without important players.”

Argentine star Aguero added: “I think it was over the line! I was happy for the technology. I am very happy with the goal because the first half we had chances.”

Guardiola revealed City suffered in the first half because of the “dry” Turf Moor pitch, but wasn't blaming Burnley .

“It was dry. When we come to Etihad we put the stadium how we want. When you visit they prepare it. The grass was high. It was hard to move the ball. That is why I love the Premier League. It is incredible.

“Second half we created a new rhythm. They were solid and defended it was not easy but we did it.

“Two games and we come again. In the first half we didn't create too much but of course it is what it is, we knew in these kind of games you play with intention and 92 pints is incredible.

"It is in our hands, we must win our next two games and our next one against Leicester."
