Pep Guardiola issues Lionel Messi challenge to Bayern Munich after equalling record

Pep Guardiola has issued a challenge to Bayern Munich involving Lionel Messi after the German club equalled his record.

Bundesliga and Champions League winners Bayern won their sixth title at the Club World Cup this week, completing a sextuple.

Hansi Flick’s men are only the second team in history to complete a clean sweep of available silverware after Barcelona did the same in 2009.

And the man who led Messi, Xavi and the rest of the famous cavalry - Manchester City boss Guardiola - issued a fresh challenge to the victorious Bayern side.

The former Bayern manager said on a video on Twitter: “Big congratulations to all Bayern family for this incredible success, to be the Club World Champion, especially to win six titles.

”I am so proud, and a big congratulations for everyone, especially Hansi, the players and the backroom staff, this is an amazing achievement.

“But I would like to say to Hansi that you are the second team to win the six titles in a row, so before it was Barcelona, so maybe I can call Messi and company, and we can play for the seventh title?

“Tell me when and where, and we will be there.”

A match between Barcelona’s class of 2009 and Bayern’s 2021 victors would truly be something to behold.

But Flick appears to be happy with the six titles for now, lavishing praise on his historic side.

“Congratulations to my team, they have certainly achieved something historic,” said Flick after the win overt Tigres in Qatar.

“Even for a successful club like FC Bayern, it is surely the best season they have ever had.

“The victory was in no way at risk. We were dominant and deserved to win the final. It is outstanding what the team has achieved: The mentality on the pitch today was just great.

“At the end, one or two players were certainly at their limits, which is why we made some early substitutions. It's a huge success for the team and a great, outstanding team performance."
