Pep Guardiola has no doubts Liverpool target Thiago Alcantara would thrive in Premier League

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has delivered his verdict on Thiago Alcantara amid ongoing links with a move to Liverpool.

The Spain international – once a target for Manchester United – has been strongly-linked with a transfer to Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League champions after rejecting a new deal at Bayern.

Guardiola managed the 29-year-old during his time at Barcelona and Bayern Munich - and is convinced he would be a success in English football.

“No doubt about it,” said the Manchester City manager. “A player who plays for Barcelona and Bayern Munich can play in the Premier League.

“Of course he can play. He’s an exceptional player, but I don’t know what he’s going to do.”

When asked if he would be interested in bringing his former player to the Etihad, Guardiola side-stepped the question.

He is set to lose one of his key players in David Silva at the end of the season, while Fernandinho will enter the final year of his contract at the age of 35.

Guardiola has vowed to give Phil Foden the chance to fill Silva’s boots, but he does intend to carry out an overhaul of the squad that relinquished the title to Liverpool this season.

His priorities are in defence where he wants to sign at least one top class centre half, as well as a left back.
