Pep Guardiola has a message for Unai Emery following his sacking by Arsenal

Pep Guardiola has said he is "so sorry" for Unai Emery following his Arsenal exit.

The Spaniard has left his position as Arsenal head coach following a run of seven games without a win in all competitions, with the Gunners taking action to end his 18-month spell in charge.

During that time, he guided Arsenal to the Europa League final last season, where they lost out against Chelsea, while the Gunners also missed out on Champions League football after finishing fifth in the top flight last season.

But the Manchester City boss has expressed his sympathy with Emery, who he has faced as a manager during his time in La Liga in Spain and more recently, in England in the Premier League.

“I’m so sorry for him,” said Guardiola, speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Manchester City's match with Newcastle United tomorrow (Saturday).

James Benge on Unai Emery being sacked

“Every time a manager is sacked it’s not good news, honestly.

“But it doesn’t change my opinion about his capacity. He’s an incredible professional, he did incredibly well in Spain.

“He won three Europa Leagues in a row with Sevilla, one of the most incredible achievements. I know and he knows it’s [down to] results.”
