Pep Guardiola hails nine players from Manchester United team

Pep Guardiola has praised the Manchester United team that his Barcelona side beat to win the Champions League 10 years ago.

Guardiola won the European Cup twice with Barcelona, in 2009 and 2011, with the first of those triumphs coming at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

United went into the final as defending champions following the previous year's penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea in Moscow but, despite an encouraging start to the game, they were soundly beaten.

Samuel Eto'o opened the scoring in the first half with a stabbed finish from close range, before Lionel Messi wrapped up victory with a looping header over Edwin van der Sar.

United and Barcelona would go on to contest the final two years later at Wembley but by that point Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez had both left and the Catalans dominated, running out 3-1 winners.

Recalling the team of 2009, Guardiola told BT Sport’s What I Wore: "That Manchester United was outrageous, it was outstanding.

“So you know Cristiano Ronaldo, Tevez, Berbatov, Scholes, Carrick, Giggs, Ferdinand, Vidic, Van der Sar. It was an incredible team.

“We had a lot of problems their with the back four. We had three injuries in the starting XI.

“But we (Barcelona) were full of confidence, we’d won the league and the cup and we did it.”
