Pep Guardiola gives verdict on referee performance in Liverpool vs Man City

Pep Guardiola has admitted he would have been more angry about referee Paul Tierney's decision not to send off James Milner had Manchester City gone on to lose the game.

The Blues boss was seething when the official failed to produce what appeared to be a clear second yellow, as the ex-City man stretched out his leg behind him to trip Bernardo Silva as the midfield ace drifted past him.

Milner had already been booked for a first half challenge on Phil Foden, and survived a strong penalty claim after clipping the City ace as the England youngster sprinted into the box.

But the fact Milner survived the second yellow incensed Guardiola even more than the refusal to award a penalty — although he calmed down enough to share a joke with Milner about the incident in the tunnel after the game.

Guardiola refused to lay in to Tierney, although he said the referee will realise he has made a mistake once he views the replay.

Guardiola said: "Referees have emotions and he knows when he’s going to see the action he will know it’s a yellow card.

"I understand the pressure, the referee has the pressure, the player has the pressure, a decision has to be made in one second.

"Maybe yes, maybe no, but it was clear, 25 minutes left, at that moment it was 1-1. Now I’m more or less satisfied because we drew, but had we lost I would be more angry."
