Pep Guardiola gives update on Man City future after claims he will leave in two years

Pep Guardiola has said he is not thinking of leaving Manchester City when his current contract expires in two years’ time.

The Blues boss was quoted yesterday as saying he will need a break in 2023, after seven years in charge at City, and had ambitions to manage an international team after that.

He had taken part in a Zoom call as part of the XP Investimentos event, which was reported by ESPN.

Guardiola was quoted as saying: “After seven years on this team, I think I’m going to have a stop. I’m going to have to take a break, see what we’ve done. And in the process, I would like to train a South American (team), European (national side), playing a Copa América – I want to have that experience.”

But when asked about it at his press conference on Friday, Guardiola said he is not intent on leaving City in 2023.

“I am so delighted to answer. I am not thinking to leave after two years,” he said.

“I can leave after two months when the results are not good or the organisation is tired of me or I cannot handle the players.

“What I said on the Zoom with the people with Brazil is after my period with Manchester City I will take a break. It can be in one month, in two years, three years, four years. Right now I don’t have reasons to leave.

“My target this season is I am going to try and play better. When I am finished I will take a rest — 12 or 13 years without a stop — and then I will take something else and after that maybe a new team after the break or a national team or if someone wants me but I didn’t say after two years I will finish my time at Manchester City.”
