Pep Guardiola gives Sergio Aguero injury update ahead of Man City v Real Madrid

Sergio Aguero’s fight to make the final stages of the Champions League – if Manchester City get there – is looking increasingly difficult.

But manager Pep Guardiola said he remains hopeful that Kun will still be able to join up with the squad at some point

The Blues are revving up for the second leg of their last 16 clash with Real Madrid at the Etihad on Friday night, and are favourites to progress after taking a 2-1 lead in the first leg.

Aguero was ruled out of that game a fortnight ago after undergoing surgery on a knee meniscus problem at the clinic of Dr Ramon Cugat in Barcelona.

And with a week to go before the Lisbon-based tournament for the last eight kicks off, the Blues’ all-time top goalscorer is still in the Catalan capital.

Aguero injured his knee in the 5-0 thrashing of Burnley on June 22, and it is increasingly unlikely he will be fit enough for the remainder of the tournament, which climaxes with the final on August 23.

Guardiola confirmed Aguero is still undergoing treatment at the clinic.

Asked whether Aguero could still play some part this season, he said: “Right now, I don’t know. He is still in Barcelona.

“He is getting better. I spoke with the doctors. Everything is like I thought but he is still in Barcelona. Hopefully.”
