Pep Guardiola gives Sergio Aguero and Benjamin Mendy Man City injury updates

Sergio Aguero will not be fit to face Real Madrid in the Champions League next month.

The Manchester City striker has been ruled out by manager Pep Guardiola, after having surgery on a knee meniscus problem he picked up in the 5-0 win over Burnley last month.

The Argentina striker faces a race against time to play any further part in the competition, even if City do progress after the second leg of their last 16 game.

If City go through on August 7 or 8, the first game of the last-eight tournament will take place within a week, gving Aguero very little time to recover.

Guardiola was also asked to give team news ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League game at Brighton, but said he had not yet consulted with the doctor.

But he did explain the absence of Benjamin Mendy, who has not been in the squad for the last two games.

He said, when asked how his players were coping with the relentless re-start schedule: “I see the team really well. They have some problems like after two or three games in a row Mendy was not comfortable and that is why he rested.

“We have to try to rotate the team to be fresh for especially Arsenal and Madrid to arrive in the best condition to take the best decisions for the benefit of the team but also the best way to keep intensity is to play at our level and our rhythm.”
