Pep Guardiola gives honest view as VAR sees Spurs progress at the expense of Man City

Pep Guardiola has said that he supports VAR but was left frustrated by the decision to allow Fernando Llorente's decisive goal against Man City.

The Spurs striker controversially put the ball in the back of the net during the second half at the Etihad Stadum with the linesman calling for handball.

After consulting with VAR, the referee allowed the goal claiming that it had actually come off the Spaniard's hip, meaning that the goal was legal.

However one camera angle appeared to still show the ball catching Llorente's arm, leaving Guardiola frustrated as his side bowed out of the Champions League.

He said: "I support VAR. It is just to see the goal maybe from Llorente is handball.

“From one angle it is handball. From the angle the referee saw it is not so but I am for fair football, for fair decisions.

"The referees must be helped sometimes. When it is offside, it is offside. What can I say? I think in the future, and even in the present it will be fair and that is all.”

Alongside Llorente's goal, VAR proved decisive in the tie as Raheem Sterling's late goal was ruled out after Sergio Aguero was deemed to be offside.

"It is cruel but it is what it is and we have to accept it," said Guardiola.

"After 20 minutes we were 3-2 up. In the second half we created a lot of chances and we scored the goals we needed. Unfortunately, it was a bad end for us so congratulations to Tottenham and good luck for the semi-finals."
