Pep Guardiola gives Gabriel Jesus vs Sergio Aguero verdict for Man City

Gabriel Jesus is primed to replace Sergio Aguero as Manchester City step up their hunt for Premier League and FA Cup honours.

And Blues boss Pep Guardiola has spoken about how difficult it has been for the star – who turns 22 tomorrow – to follow in the footsteps of Kun.

Brazil striker Jesus has not started a league game since January 14, when he scored twice in the 3-0 win over Wolves.

But Aguero is out of tomorrow’s home clash with Cardiff with a muscle injury, and is also a doubt for Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final, and that means Jesus is likely to lead the line.

He reminded everyone of his potential with two goals against the Czech Republic during the international break, but Aguero’s brilliant form has restricted his chances for City this season.

Jesus has made just seven league starts this season but has six goals – and now has the chance to make his mark on the bid to land the quadruple.

After displacing Aguero immediately following his £27million arrival from Palmeiras in 2017, Jesus has been pushed to one side as Aguero has adapted his game and become invaluable to the Blues.

But Guardiola proclaimed himself satisfied with Jesus’ progress, while emphasising how hard it is for a young player to come into a club and compete with a legend like Aguero.

“He makes a good season,” said Guardiola. “Always it is not easy to play in this club, a striker in the same position as Sergio.

“The best season he has been together with Sergio is this one. He is a respectful guy. Tomorrow he is going to help us and fight and score goals.”
