Pep Guardiola explains why Joao Cancelo has not started for Man City

Summer signing Joao Cancelo has not yet started for Manchester City because he missed pre-season but will definitely be involved after the international break.

The full back came on for a 90 second cameo at the end of the 3-1 win against Bournemouth last weekend but that has been his only involvement for City since joining from Juventus in the summer.

Kyle Walker has impressed at right back in the opening three games of the new Premier League campaign and the City manager was asked when Cancelo would be likely to start, ahead of Brighton's visit to the Etihad on Saturday.

"When we come back after the international break, with Norwich, then travel to Ukraine, then three days late we have another game here and then the cup, that's the start of the real season," Guardiola said.

"Joao, we’re delighted with what we’ve seen but he arrived late and he wasn't in pre-season. There are many things Kyle knows completely and Joao is starting to understand what to do. Maybe tomorrow, maybe after the international break. He needs to be ready and when he is, he will play."

How Stones and Jesus are affected by injuries

Walker has been Guardiola's go to right back so far this season and the City manager admitted he was a little bit surprised that the defender was omitted from Gareth Southgate's most recent England squad.

"A little bit surprised at first. I’m not involved. We’ll respect the decision. Kyle is coming back stronger. I understand him and support Gareth," Guardiola said about the decision.

"I’m pretty sure the players want to go to the national team. It’s happened, so we adapt. We have time with our family now with the international break. Come back and play as best as possible to come back to the national team."
