Pep Guardiola explains what Sergio Aguero needs for new Man City contract

Pep Guardiola thinks that Sergio Aguero still has to earn a new contract at Manchester City just like he does.

The club record scorer is in the final year of his deal at City, but after so many years of consistently high performances the Blues will not be pushing him out of the door.

However, Aguero’s appearance against Arsenal was his first since June and the club are keen for him to show that he is over his injury problems, while the possibility of signing Lionel Messi on a free transfer is coming more into view.

Guardiola has said previously that the 32-year-old can leave on his terms and praised his return to the side, yet he also thinks that Aguero will want to return to his high level before thinking about a new contract.

“The important thing is that Sergio comes back in good physical condition, starts to get his rhythm, doesn’t get more injuries and and plays good,” he said.

“We know what he means for us, we know how we appreciate him, but now he has to show like everyone of us, me first, that we deserve to continue here and playing good and winning games.

“After that, the club and myself of course decide, but when he is playing in his level and we don't have any doubts he is a player to stay until he decides [to go] because he unique, the numbers, he is important for us, the fans and for everyone.

“Having Sergio on the pitch, we are better, we are safer. We missed him a lot in important moments in the later part of the season. Now it is good news for us today that he is back."
