Pep Guardiola explains Man City substitutions against Cheltenham

Pep Guardiola felt that Manchester City needed more quality in the final third as they trailed Cheltenham Town in the FA Cup.

The Blues were staring at the biggest upset of the manager's five years at the club when Alfie May stabbed home from a Ben Tozer long throw on the hour-mark, leading to first-team regulars Ruben Dias, Ilkay Gundogan and Joao Cancelo all being brought off the bench for the closing moments.

City's plan worked, with Cancelo's cross finding Foden for the equaliser in the final 10 minutes before goals from Jesus and Ferran Torres completed the turnaround. Guardiola bemoaned the chances his side had wasted prior to the opener that may well have made life a lot easier against the League Two opposition, and was relieved that his changes had made a difference.

"When you make a change you try to look for something," the manager said.

"The young two players [Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Tommy Doyle] played really well but the quality of Gundogan and Joao in the final third was so important. Gundo has the sense to score and with Phil and Riyad [Mahrez] in the final third we had the quality for the final pass and dribble and that's why they came in."

Guardiola also paid tribute to Michael Duff and Cheltenham after they took his Premier League heavyweights all the way, declaring them a "fantastic" team with an "exceptional" player up front in May and a major weapon in their long throw.
