Pep Guardiola doubles down on Eric Garcia stance in message to Ronald Koeman

Pep Guardiola has once again waxed lyrical about Eric Garica, who recently swapped Manchester City for Barcelona.

The centre-half opted against signing a new deal at the Etihad and has moved to the Catalans on a free.

Garcia had broken into the City starting XI last term but was marginalised when it became clear he wasn't staying.

Nevertheless Guardiola has spoken highly of the young Spaniard, who he believes has a bright future ahead of him.

Earlier in his career the City boss was quizzed on the 20-year-old's qualities and said: “He's so smart, so intelligent. His physicality is not so, so strong, but he resolves the situation by thinking.

"I like to work with smart people, intelligent people. He is one of them. I can count on him. He has shown me an incredible personality.”

Garcia will be joined at Barcelona by Sergio Aguero, who also left City on a free.

Guardiola has talked up Ronald Koeman's latest defensive asset claiming he will one day don the captain's armband.

“Agüero and Eric Garcia are two great signings, total successes," he told Que T'hi Judues.

"Kun is a goal scorer, with Eric I already told Koeman that he has made a spectacular signing, he’s a jewel, very intelligent. He’ll be one of the captains of the next decade.”

Koeman will remain in charge at the Nou Camp next term despite doubts over his future.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta claimed the club's performances over the past 12 months were unacceptable and suggested changes were coming.

Former player Xavi was linked with the managerial role which saw Koeman come out fighting as he cited a lack of respect.

Guardiola though is pleased to see the Dutchman, who won the Copa del Rey, given another year at the helm.

He added: “Koeman is the ideal coach for next season. I’m very happy and the president is convinced. It’s been a tough year for everyone and Ronald deserves another year, with people in the stadium.”
