Pep Guardiola dismisses importance of Chelsea defeat as Thomas Tuchel issues injury update

Here is your Chelsea morning digest on Sunday, May 9.

Christensen limps off vs Man City

The Chelsea defender has enjoyed a wonderful run of form in recent weeks, becoming an integral part of a Blues defence that has kept the most clean sheets in the Premier League since Thomas Tuchel arrived in January.

However, he was forced out of action just before the interval against Manchester City as he injured himself in the build-up to City's opening goal.

The Denmark international landed awkwardly and could not continue, replaced by Kurt Zouma just shy of half-time.

Tuchel admitted that the injury provided a sour note on what was an otherwise fantastic afternoon for Chelsea, who came from behind to secure a vital three points as they bid for a top-four finish.

The Chelsea boss said: "I hope, I hope, I hope that it’s not too bad and he can recover in the next few days."

Tuchel's reaction to Man City victory

Chelsea took a huge step forward in their pursuit of Champions League qualification after beating league leaders Manchester City 2-1.

The win continues Tuchel's remarkable form away from home since arriving as Chelsea, the German coach yet to lose a league game on his travels.

It was a game littered with talking points after Manchester City were awarded one penalty, which was spectacularly missed by Sergio Aguero, denied another on Raheem Sterling and saw Chelsea grab a 93rd-minute winner courtesy of Marcos Alonso.

The game was something of a dress rehearsal for when the sides meet later this month in the Champions League final.

Chelsea will be going into that clash confident in the knowledge Tuchel has now got the better of Pep Guardiola on two occasions this season.

Pep Guardiola dismisses the importance of Chelsea defeat, citing Liverpool as an example

Pep Guardiola used Liverpool's form this season as a way of dismissing any talk of Chelsea making it three wins in a row against Man City later this month.

The sides meet in the most important game in club football later this month when the pair will lock horns in the Champions League final, and some Chelsea fans may take some confidence in the fact that Tuchel has now registered two wins over Guardiola since arriving in west London.

Beyond that, Chelsea may see themselves as the closest team to City to mount a title charge to end their reign of Premier League dominance, but Guardiola has poured cold water over such speculation.

After the game, the City boss protested: "Next season is next season. Many things can happen. What we have done this season, look how difficult it is - the champions of the Premier League may not qualify for the Champions League."
