Pep Guardiola delivers Mikel Arteta sack message to Arsenal as Edu makes position clear

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has backed his former assistant Mikel Arteta amid mounting pressure on the Arsenal manager.

The Gunners sit 15th in the table, just five points above the relegation zone, following their disastrous 1-0 defeat to Burnley at the Emirates on Sunday.

The 2,000 home fans booed their own players at the final whistle, following Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's own goal and Granit Xhaka's red card for violent conduct.

This is now Arsenal's worst start to a top-flight season since their 1974/75 campaign and it is the first time since 1959 that the club have lost four league games in a row at home.

Arsenal 0 - 1 Burnley: Mikel Arteta post-match press conference

Their tally of 10 goals after 12 Premier League games is their lowest at this stage of a top-flight season since 1981/82 and they have now gone 12 hours and 32 top-flight minutes without finding the net from open play.

Some fans have called for Arteta to be sacked and former Spurs striker Darren Bent believes the Arsenal boss' time at the club is up.

But that hasn't stopped Guardiola throwing his weight behind Arteta, who spent three years at City under the former Barcelona manager.

Guardiola advised Arsenal's board to give Arteta more time as he is "one of the best managers" he has ever worked with.

"Arsenal doesn't have a better manager that leads this club - in this year and the next - that is better than him," he said, via the Mirror.

"I don't have to give publicly my support because he has it and he knows that he has it.

"He's one of the best managers I've ever worked with, of course, and seen directly.

"I'm pretty sure he will turn over and will do it like everyone expects.

"But sometimes when a club comes from not a good period, sometimes it needs time.

"I would say [if I was] part of the board at Arsenal, I will not have any doubts about his quality and capacity to put Arsenal in the place like Arsenal deserves to be."

Arsenal technical director has also publically supported Arteta despite their poor results.

"Mikel is doing a great job," said Edu. "It's normal and easy to be driven by results.

"But I can see the future, see where we go, and the way we are building things on a daily basis.

"Everything here is right, everything here is working. How many young players have started to get opportunities and perform quite well in the first team?

"I can see a big and beautiful future. It's very strange to say that in this moment, but I have to be fair - that's the way I see the photo."
