Pep Guardiola defends his Man City philosophy after Champions League exit

Pep Guardiola launched a passionate defence of his style of play at Manchester City and insisted: "We won't change."

City's chances of an historic quadruple were ended in midweek when the Blues crashed out of the Champions League on away goals after their quarter-final with Tottenham Hotspur finished 4-4 on aggregate.

It was familiar heartbreak for Guardiola in Europe's premier competition. For the third season in a row at City his side have failed to reach the semi-finals and in knockout defeats to Monaco, Liverpool and Tottenham they have now conceded 15 goals in six games.

Guardiola has admitted his team need to improve in these games, but he won't be ripping up his City philosophy to try and change their fortunes in Europe.

City scored 11 times in those knockout games and they will continue to attack under their Catalan coach.

"We concede a lot but we score a lot," Guardiola said. "You have to remember the game at Anfield [in last season's quarter-final], three shots on target three goals.

"Of course we have to improve but the way we play we’ve scored 154 goals, the way we play with a good game for everyone here and around the world we’re not going to change."

Guardiola claimed he had no regrets from City's latest Champions League exit and he will tell his players to continue playing the same way next season.

"It’s not enough to go through, I’m sorry guys, next season we are going to try and always in good moments and bad, we are honest in the way we want to play," he said.

"Of course we want to improve. We have to be focused but it happens. People make mistakes, they play and make a good action or bad. We have to accept it.

"All season, not just this specific games, I’m proud. I like to see them play like this. I prefer this way. I was out sometimes in semi-final with previous teams and it was not good the way we played and I had a lot of regrets but in this situation we did everything."

Guardiola has played strong teams throughout the cup competitions this season, helping keep his side in the hunt for four trophies until the final weeks of April.

He will maintain that strategy next season, refusing to field weakened teams like many of his Premier League rivals in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

"You think the team was tired last game? We had semi-final of FA cup. I don’t understand in my profession is not to say I don’t want to win, I don’t understand that," Guardiola said.

"If I lose it’s because the opponent beat me or beat us.  I’m not going to drop any competitions because maybe in the future it will be better.

"Who knows what’s going to happen in the future the present is this game and I will try. I will dream next season of fighting for the four titles, that’s my dream."
