Pep Guardiola calls for VAR consistency after Man City denied Tottenham victory

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has called for there to be more consistency in VAR decisions after his side were denied a last minute victory against Tottenham in the Premier League.

Gabriel Jesus thought he had scored City's winner in the 92nd minute against Spurs on Saturday night only for it to be chalked off by the video assistant referee for an Aymeric Laporte handball.

It's the second time City have been denied by VAR against Spurs with Raheem Sterling's last gasp winner in the Champions League quarter final being ruled out for offside.

And Guardiola wants there to be more consistency when it comes to handball decisions and pointed at Andreas Christensen's apparent handball in the Super Cup final and an incident in the Wolves vs Leicester game on the opening weekend as examples.

"That’s the point (that it's inconsistent)," Guardiola said. "Why is it not hands with Llorente last season and why hands today? Why Llorente in the Champions League, why? Why? That is what we need to qualify.

"Christensen was not hands and Laporte today is hands. You have to see it quite properly."

Mauricio Pochettino, who has spoken out against the new ruling before, admitted it was something they all had to accept it.

"I said VAR is in football, I was a bit critical in the past, but I am going to accept the rules and I will in the future because for sure some will be against us," the Spurs manager said.

"We were upset in that moment but realised it was going to VAR and as we checked and I said it’s handball. It is the same emotion in the as Champions League, we were out and then we are in. It’s amazing to happen at this stadium with VAR and Tottenham."
