Pep Guardiola breaks silence on Man City UEFA ban ahead of West Ham fixture

Pep Guardiola said he and his Manchester City squad support the club '100 per cent' in the wake of their two-year ban from European football.

Guardiola did not hold a pre-match press conference ahead of the West Ham fixture on Wednesday having fulfilled his obligations before the original fixture. That meant the first time he spoke about the allegations came in his interview with TV broadcasters at the Etihad ahead of the game.

UEFA announced on Friday that City had been fined and banned from European competitions for two years for 'serious breaches' of financial fair play rules. The club released a strong statement following the ruling insisting they have done nothing wrong and they will go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to appeal the charges.

Earlier on Wednesday, CEO Ferran Soriano said the allegations are 'simply not true', and said the club were "looking for is a proper adjudication in an independent and impartial body that is going to take the time to look at all the evidence and look at it without preconception."

When Guardiola was asked by Sky Sports for his reaction to the sanctions, he said he would speak further after the game.

"After the game," he said.

"If you want to talk, we'll talk. Whatever you want. Now focus on what we have to do, what we can control, focus on our game."

However, Guardiola did reveal how the City squad reacted to the news, saying there was an initial impact, but the professionalism of the squad has been 'exceptional' building up to the West Ham clash.

"At the first moment there was impact," Guardiola continued.

"Perhaps a few hours. We cannot control. We support the club, 100%. What you have to is our games. They are exceptional professionals."

Guardiola also called on supporters to help the players between now and the end of the season.

He said: "Hopefully they can help us here until the end of the season. What has happened in the last seasons a lot of times. We play our game and I know it's not the perfect day to come with Champions League and it's raining. But we have to play for the people who are here."
