Pep Guardiola breaks silence on Champions League draw blunder as Chelsea find out fate

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola thinks it is "fair" to re-do the UEFA Champions League draw after officials made a mistake initially.

The draw was being conducted by Giorgio Marchetti, Pedro Pinto and Andrey Arshavin in Switzerland on Monday morning, but it will now redone this afternoon.

After Benfica vs Real Madrid was drawn as the first confirmed round of 16 tie, Villarreal were next out of the pot. The Spanish club came second in Group F - one point below Manchester United.

Of course, with the two teams being in the same group, they are unable to come up against each other in. the next round, but Man United were next to be pulled out of the pot.

Marchetti intervened and said that this tie cannot happen because of what has been mentioned above. However, United were then not placed back in the pot as a possible opponent for Atletico Madrid and the draw will now be done again.

UEFA released this statement: "Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

"As a result of this, the draw has been declared void and will be entirely redone at 1500 CET (14:00 UK time)."

Now, Guardiola, who was asked about the draw controversy in his pre-match press conference, has insisted he agrees with the decision for it to all be redone this afternoon.

"I think it's fair. If there's a mistake, you have to repeat it, so it's not suspicious," the Man City boss said.

City were initially drawn against Villarreal, while Chelsea were meant to play Lille, Liverpool versus RB Salzburg and Man United were set to go head-to-head with Paris Saint-Germain.
