Pep Guardiola backs Man City team to walk off pitch to combat racist abuse

Pep Guardiola said he would have no problem in his Manchester City team walking off the pitch if his players were subject to racist abuse.

Raheem Sterling was one of three players subjected to racist abuse in England's win against Montenegro and the City star spoke out about the unacceptable behaviour after the 5-1 win.

Gareth Southgate backed his players and the issue was reported to UEFA who are now investigating the incident.

In the league Sterling was subject to alleged racist abuse when City played Chelsea earlier in the season and Guardiola has said if it happens again he would have no issue in his team walking off.

“We could do that, we could do that," Guardiola replied when asked if he would back his team walking off. "Football is a strong weapon to defend the principles of humanity, so I remember a long time ago people said you cannot mix politics and football, but that is not true.

"Politicians is everywhere, human rights is everywhere. A long time ago in Valencia, Guus Hiddink he didn’t play because there was a Nazi flag behind the goal, so he stopped it. When the club or the players or the organisation decide to do it, of course for myself we are going to follow them.

"I would have to involve the club, the chairmen and CEOs and my captain and the team and the players, if we all together decide we can signal to do it, why not?

"The situation changes when you do something, if not it’s impossible and the situation is always the same. That is why when people like him or other cases express what they express it’s good for our future, for our society to do it.”

Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino both said similar things if their pre-match press conferences with Klopp says if a whole stand was aiming racist abuse at his players he would remove the team from the field.
