Pep Guardiola assesses Man City's goal controversy in West Brom game

Pep Guardiola will remind Manchester City players of the need to play to the whistle after they benefited from West Brom failing to do so themselves.

With the Blues already 1-0 up, a number of West Brom players stopped when they saw an offside flag for Bernardo Silva, only for Joao Cancelo to put the ball in the net and the original decision be overturned on replays.

Sam Allardyce and his players were furious with the decision, although technically the flag should not have been enough for them to stop playing because it was not accompanied by the referee's whistle.

Speaking after a 5-0 win for his side that took them to the top of the table, Guardiola was sympathetic for his opponents - he knows more than most how painful it can be to be on the wrong end of a VAR decision - and will stress to his team the importance of keeping their focus at all times even if it goes against their instincts.

"I understand the complaints from West Brom players and management," he said, "but I said many times to the team with this rule you have to follow the action until the end because now VAR makes a big influence in the game; a disallowed goal can be a goal and a goal can be disallowed.

"It is a good lesson for us, we will speak in the next days because if it happened to West Brom it can happen to us."
