Pep Guardiola makes brutally honest Man City admission ahead of Manchester United clash

Manchester City take on Manchester United in the Manchester Derby on Sunday afternoon as they saunter to another Premier League title, but Pep Guardiola admitted that he didn't recognise his team earlier in the season.

Man City sit 14 points clear of their rivals. They also have a game-in-hand and are massively strong favourites to win their third league title in four years.

They have won an incredible 21 games in succession in all competitions and are closing in on the world record.

Meanwhile, they are also in the Carabao Cup final, the FA Cup quarter-final, and are 2-0 up after the first leg against Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League Last 16.

It has been a dominant season for Man City, but Guardiola admits that his team have not always performed at this level this year.

Guardiola remembers a 1-1 draw with West Brom earlier in the season in which his team struggled to create chances and score goals.

Across the opening nine games, City scored more than once on just two occasions. Both of those came in the first two weeks, one of which was a 5-2 defeat to Leicester City.

And Guardiola admits that he changed things after the West Brom draw, with Man City winning every game they have played since then.

"It was not just the last game against West Brom specifically, it was the last games before West Brom," he told Sky Sports.

"Always, I am a spectator. I am a manager but I am a spectator. I want to enjoy. I want to see my team playing in the way the team must be played and I didn't watch it for a long, long time.

"I lose in Barcelona, I lose in Munich, but I always recognise my team. In that period, I couldn't recognise it. I didn't like it.

"And yes, sometimes, we had one or two days off, reflect, talk with my backroom staff.

"We did it in England, we did it in Germany, in Spain as well.

"We just come back to our principles, do what we have to do, and try to do it again.

"It is not a guarantee to win games, but at least we will be proud to recognise what we want to be, the way we want to live."
