Pep Guardiola came up with another surprise team selection by leaving £100million man Jack Grealish on the bench for the Manchester derby.
The England star has been close to being an ever-present this season, but made way as the Blues took apart Manchester United in a 2-0 win that flattered the Reds.
Guardiola said before the game that he had picked Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus as he wanted a left-footed player on the left, and a right-footed player on the right - something he rarely does, as he likes his wide players to carve inside.
But he explained the reasoning behind it afterwards, and says the tactic was a ploy to try to expose United's intention to play with three centre-backs.
"Against a back five when you go to the byline you break all the back five," explained Guardiola. "With a back five you play on the opposite foot so a right-footer if you go inside they wait for you.
"They (United) got a good result against Tottenham with five in the back. We thought the best way was to play Phil left and Gabby right.
"Both can play in different positions so during the game we thought that they could play in different positions. In those positions you make actions to the byline and you drop them and you can make your attacks more efficient. "
