Hundreds of estates are yet to be claimed in Wales. When someone dies without leaving a will, officials monitors whether a lawful heir has made a claim to their estate. But if no claim is made, the money could make its way into the UK Government's accounts.
From the day of death, you have 12 years to apply to claim an estate in the case of money, or 30 years otherwise. If you are eligible to inherit it, you must provide a family tree that proves how you are related to the individual.
Most Welsh counties have at least one unclaimed estate, according to government records. The government publishes a list of these unclaimed estates on a regular basis.

If someone dies without leaving a valid or effective will (intestate) the following are entitled to the estate in the order shown below:
- husband, wife or civil partner
- children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and so on
- mother or father
- brothers or sisters who share both the same mother and father, or their children (nieces and nephews)
- half brothers or sisters or their children (nieces and nephews of the half blood or their children). ‘Half ’ means they share only one parent with the deceased
- grandparents
- uncles and aunts or their children (first cousins or their descendants)
- half uncles and aunts or their children (first cousins of the half blood or their children). ‘Half’ means they only share one grandparent with the deceased, not both
