'People will lose jobs' Scots raise concerns over 'terrible' idea of 'self-service only' supermarkets

Supermarket giants are edging forever closer to a 'self-checkout only' way of operating - but the 'more modern' way to shop is not everyone's cup of tea.

From issues with items in the bagging area to waiting for your age-restricted items to be untagged, self-service checkouts can sometimes take longer and be more fuss than the 'old fashioned' till and cashier method.

We asked our readers how they would feel if stores operated on a self-checkout only basis and it is fair to say the vast majority were against the idea.

Some were very against the idea and simply would boycott the stores where self-scan was the only option.

Donna Kearney said: "I wouldn't shop there."

Carlone Brown agreed, and said: "Would not use it."

Fred Gordon commented: "Would be shopping elsewhere".

A real concern highlighted in the discussion was that self-checkout only supermarkets would result in job losses and redundancies as the number of staff required would decrease dramatically.

Gail Johnstone said: "No thanks, it would be doing people out of jobs!!".

Dawn Franklin said: "Terrible idea and will create more unemployment."

In addition to this, some readers aired that there is a need for human connection and a store run purely by machines would really put them off.

Jane Stopes said: "There's always a problem and a member of staff has to help. Keep tills open and people in jobs".

Kelly Allan was angered by the idea, and said: "[That is] doing people out of jobs and we are only human beings and we all need human contact."

Kerry Methven commented: "There is less and less interaction between each other. Might as well speak to myself! People will lose jobs..."

Specific concerns about the difficulties some people would face if manned tills were no longer an option were also part of the discussion.

For example, Ainsely McDougall asked: "What about older people who struggle as it is? Or blind people? The ones who need assistance?".

What do you think of the idea of self-checkout only supermarkets? Would it put you off or would you prefer it? Have your say in the comments section.
